Casino operator Boyd Gaming reported a third-quarter net income of $31.8 million, compared with a net loss of $12.9 million a year earlier. Company revenue fell eight per cent to $490.1 million, which Boyd attributed to the opening of a new competitor in the northern Indiana market, resumption of competition in the US Gulf Coast and the closure of the its Stardust casino-hotel in Las Vegas.

Profit from its Borgata casino in Atlantic City rose by nearly six per cent, according to Boyd, despite growing competition from new gambling facilities in nearby Pennsylvania and New York

Boyd closed the Stardust last year to make way for a new casino development called the Echelon on the Las Vegas Strip.
