There are two or three things to look for in order to find if a die is of good quality. Dice have been invented more than two thousand years ago, and ever since then formed part of a myriad of different games, but it is relatively easy to cheat the principle on which dice work: gravity associated with an equal chance for each facet to appear and thus generate a result.



Since gravity doesn't change usually, it is not a factor influencing any die's quality of results: instead, the distribution of weight or mass and the errors in the symmetry of construction are the things that might induce bias.









It is important to stress that no human creation is perfect: it would be impossible to produce a perfect die, with an equal distribution of mass, unaffected by temperature or anything else. Having said that, there are of course, processes that lead to the production of quality dice, and there are some telltale signs.



One of the things to look for is transparency in its truest sense: a die should be transparent, not opaque, so that everybody is able to see through it and verify that the inner mass is homogeneous. While this might not preclude all tampering attempts, it makes them far more difficult. No interior cracks or bubbles should exist.



Facets should be clean, with no scratches: angles between each facet should be perfectly straight. No bruises, marks truncated sides or edges are acceptable. Each one of these things will certainly induce biased results.



And the other thing to look for is the kind of dots that the die has. If the spots or dots are hollowed out, the die is not good because there will be a variation in the centre of gravity of the cube due to the fact that the more hollow points on one face, the further from it the C.G. will be and naturally, that would influence results. The spots must be filled with a material sharing the same physical properties as the cube: the same density, specific mass and so on.
